Promote social responsibility in science & engineering

Submitted By:   SPUSA
Committers:  29
Date Created:  2008-04-16
Description:   Science and technology have a significant impact on society and policy. In 1955 Albert Einstein, Bertrand Russell, and other eminent scientists issued a manifesto urging scientists to "think in a new way" about their moral responsibilities in the nuclear age. Today, the need for social responsibility in science and technology extends beyond nuclear nonproliferation concerns to health issues, such neglected tropical diseases; the impact of emerging technologies, such as nanotechnology; and energy and environment issues, such as climate change. Join me in pledging to learn more about the role of science and technology in society and starting a conversation with your friends about what you learn. The next U.S. president and Congress will have will face a number of policy challenges relating to science, technology, and medicine. Learn more at http://www.spusa.org/2008vote.
