Who Owns Ideas is a great introductory documentary about the history of copyright and current controversies in copyright. I wished however, that it had gone more into depth about downloading music and movies. I was reading a blog post of someone who attended a techy conference and was very...... [view]

There is no such thing as pure content . The information highway is for...... [view]

I recently attended a lecture by Prof Andrew Clement through IPSI addressing how our current legal/policy frameworks handling personal information are no longer adequate. Using the example of the no fly list used by the US and Canada, Clement presented a number of case studies in which...... [view]

“… we’ve confused security with control, and instead of building systems for real security, we’re building systems of control. Think of ID checks everywhere, the no-fly list, warrantless eavesdropping, broad surveillance, data mining, and all the systems to check up on...... [view]

The library field has definitely seen a shift in the past couple of years from conservatism (or even outright fear and antagonism) regarding the internet and web 2.0 towards a new kind of excitement. Or at least, excitement along with the conservatism. Personal case in point - recently,...... [view]

The curious thing about digital information and online information is that it is a novel mix of standardized, fixed, literate text and fluid, flexible oral communication.* We want to use online writing to facilitate a pseudo-oral, lateral, community discussion without being bonded to our words...... The Branding AIDS Conference brought together some interesting and experienced speakers from academic, medical and advocacy backgrounds. I was hoping the conference would explore greater themes of ethical consumerism and corporate social responsibility but it was mainly focused on Red products...... [view]

Do you find people who anthropomorphize technology bizarre? I have to admit, I’ve named all of my computers. And my first car. And my pianos. I think of machines as if they’re pets. I realize this is a strange way to think about a machine. But to not anthropomorphize the relationship also...... [view]
